Early on, Pete resolved that he could never be Jimi Hendrix. He concentrated
more on a unique rythym style and let Keith and John take over the lead! He
didn't really start doing extended lead playing until the time of Tommy, but
even then, he didn't (want to) become Jimmy Page. In one of these new
articles, he states that his fingers could never keep up with his head for
lead playing. To him, the song in its entirety was much more important than
virtuoso guitar leads.

Personally, I play with heavy strings on the highs (.11s), and mediums on the
lows (.10s--you guitarists will know what I mean). You get a better tone out
of thicker strings, not to mention breaking them less often (which I always
do with thinner strings) or needing to retune constantly.

This probably doesn't answer your question, but maybe provides some insight.
