The situation right now is pretty chronic.
I was in the City today and here's my report after having talked with
several of the store owners.
Last Tuesday, busts were carried out at two of the major outlets,
namely "Revolver", on 8th Street and Sixth Avenue, and the store, whose
name escapes me (Second Coming), on Thompson Street and Bleecker
Street.
Revolver was hit badly, and it is now padlocked. Apparently, Revolver
was not only selling bootlegs, but it was doing the unthinkable (in
record company terms) by pirating copies of officially released albums.
This, I'm sure, prompted the busts. The other store was relieved of
its entire stock of boots (CD's and videos). It still remains open,
but only selling official releases. Many other stores in downtown NYC
have clearly been affected by this, and buying boots is now like buying
kiddie porn, i.e. you have to ask for it and they will only serve you
if they think you aren't undercover. I do not intend to name names,
but one or two stores did have a very small selection on display.
(snip... discussion on Zep CDs)
I am reassured to hear that things should return to normal after a
cooling off period. I'm sure that the confiscation of the inventories
will cause a rise in boot prices. I will make further posts as I get
new information.
If anyone has any additional news on this I (and I'm sure the rest of
the group) will appreciate it. If anyone has any corrections to make
to what I heard, I'd definitely appreciate it.
