Replacement speakers/head unit

I've got a 97 GLX (Clarion system), and I have a scratchy front speaker 
and an apparently dead rear woofer. I don't know for sure if the 
speakers are dead or if it is something in the head unit. So, two 
questions:

1. Suggestions for a new head unit?

2. Suggestions for new speakers. Does anybody make drop-in units to 
replace the stock ones?
