RE: Brake Job

This brings up a question I've had for a while. I've had my '98 GLX for just over
three years and about one year ago, I started getting brake dust buildup on the
wheels. At first it was kind of light and I even thought it was just road grime,
but now it is very heavy on all 4 wheels. Does this indicate a problem or is it
normal? Do the pads need replacing, and are there dustless pads? (brakes work
great, btw).

As for the plug wire problem I posted about last week, I pulled the plug and it
was threaded fine and the plug itself looked good. I attached the wire to the
pulled plug to check for fit and it fit fine. I screwed the plug back in, put the
wire on, drove it and the wire came loose. Then, out of total desperation, I
pulled the plug again, put the wire tightly on the plug and then screwed the plug
in, using the wire as a "wrench" buy twisting it clockwise until the plug was
seated. That was 5 days ago and the wire has held and the car drives great. I am
concerned though that the plug may not be torqued correctly. Any thoughts?

thanks
jeff

P.S. Anyone know how to suppress my email when I post to this list? I'd like to
get a header like Chuck does (below), that doesn't post his email, just the "on
behalf of..." I noticed my email shows up in the header when I post and
apparently it got picked up by some data miners or site scrapers because I started
getting spam to this email account after I joined this list and this was a spam
free account. thanks.

The fronts are cake as long as you can get that rotor screw off. You may
want to soak it with some spray lube for a while (ie. liquid wrench, WD-40).

The rears are trickier because you have to twist the brake piston while
pushing it in. I think there is a special tool for it (or you can make
one), unless you already know what I'm talking about. :P

I am getting ready to sell my '97 GLX and to do that I am replacing all of
the Rotors and pads. Are there any gotcha's to look out for? I have done
lots of brake jobs on BMW's but never a VW so I don't know if there are any
inside tricks to make the job go smoother.
