RE: 60K Mile Service on 98 Jetta GLX

The VR6 engine uses timing chains. In theory, they are good for the life of
the engine. The parts that need to be replaced are usually the timing chain
tensioner and chain guides. The guides get worn out within 60-90k miles,
and you will hear an annoying raspy-rattling sound coming from the engine.
A good time to replace the guides and tensioner is when you either replace a
leaking head gasket or bad clutch.

Timing chains are known for stretching, but this is when you run rediculous
amounts of power.

Does the timing belt really need to be replaced at 60K miles? One
dealer says yes. Another says just inspect it.
