Same thing happened to me. It turned out to be a pin, that connects the
lock(tumbler) to the locking mechanism, that snapped in half. At first I
thought I had to remove the door panel from the inside. I found out later
that all I had to do is remove a bolt from the the side of the door,
parallel with the handle. I guess I should have read the bently manual.
Anyway, you might also have to replace the tumbler, as well because VW now
makes the pin thicker because too many of them were breaking (surprise).
Again, all you have to do is remove a bolt, it's a large star key(not sure of
the name or size) once you do that, you just slide the handle to the right(if
it's your driver side door) and then you can replace the pin or lock if you
have to. If you have to replace the tumbler then you have to reset the pins
inside as well.( a real pain in the butt).
