stock exhaust question

I was thinking of doing a little tweaking to my stock exhaust. I hate not
being able to hear it at all. Being in some VR6's with the Tectonics exhaust
(Garrett and his Mk2 VR6... yummy) and I love the sound. I want to hear my
exhaust too. But I don't have the $500 or so to get the system. So in the
mean time I was thinking of getting the middle suitcase removed and put in a
straight pipe in with 2-45 degree bends (I heard a 90 degree will give you
some bad drowning within the car). Has anyone done this? I think David did
this, how was it? I never got to ride in your GTI. I'm planning on doing
this on Friday. Thanks
