sounds like the problem i had on my 97 glx.  brought it in to the dealer and 
they replaced a chip in the computer.  according to them some glx's had cold 
start problems, i cant excatly remember its been 4 years since then, but the 
symptoms that you just explained was happening to me.  btw i got it fixed 
under warranty.  they had to send the ecu back to vw to get rechipped for the 
cold start prob.  my car even did it when warm like yours does
