RE: The VW Jetta GLX Mailing List Digest V4 #216

Re: cruise control

....my cruise control was working intermittently also and was driving me
nuts. I finally figured out that it was dependent on the position of the
clutch pedal. It seems that the clutch pedal return spring is weakening, so
the pedal doesn't fully return when I take my foot off the clutch. This was
fooling the cruise control sensor into thinking I was depressing the clutch,
so the cruise wouldn't engage. When this happens, all I have to do is stick
my foot behind the clutch pedal and pull the pedal up a little. Then the
cruise control works flawlessly.

Hope this helps.

I used to live in Las Cruces, NM, and worked in El Paso. One day going to
work
I passed a Derby on I-10. I was similarly baffled. So I did some looking
online, and found a whole mess of VW's that they sell in South America and
other
parts of the world that we never see here. I know the Derby I saw had
Mexican
plates. If memory serves (it's been a couple years), the one I saw was red
too.
Maybe there's only one! I agree, wouldn't trade the glx for it for
anything,
but it was cute and interesting.

It could be a VW Lupo or a VW Polo. Take a look at the Lupo:

and it's bigger cousin, the Polo:

I know somebody sent this out on the Drag list, but I thought I'd send it to
the other lists that I'm on. You have a choice between an GTI 1.8T or a
Civic SI. You can win money and buy mods for your car, and you can also
challenge other racers on-line.

Well-I took my car into the dealer two thursdays ago since i was having
trouble shifting into first, it was making crunching noises when i stuck it
in reverse, and the clutch was making weird noises. so they told me to
bring it back in on monday since they said the transmission needed to be
rebuilt. it seems extremely odd that something like this would happen after
35,500 miles. but i did bring it back, and i finally got it back tonite
after a week of it sitting in the shop (they were ordering parts, tools,
blah blah, and it was taking a while because they had never seen a problem
like this before...).

they told me that what happened was that a tooth broke off the reverse gear
and was bouncing around in the tranny and messed up the other gears. they
said they had fixed this problem, and when driving the car out of the
parking lot, i could feel that 1st and 2nd gears were very stiff and not
the typical feel we're used to. so i brought it right back around, and one
of the techs drove and said that something was definitely wrong. in the
meanwhile, as soon as i started my car, the check engine light also came
on. then the tech hooks it up to his computer to check what the check
engine light was about, and he managed to get it turned off, but said there
was a 99% chance that it'd come back on again on the drive home, and that
it was a "hard fault" now permanently stored in the computer (whatever that
means)- hopefully something simple like an air intake problem, or maybe a
loose sensor because of the transmission work. in the meanwhile, i'm
thinking in my head that it's hopefully not the garrett chip i put in. and
i'm scared that if he figures out that there's a chip in there, he might
void my engine's warranty (even though there's only 500 miles left...).
accordingly, i tell him i'll drop it off again in the morning so that if i
decide to, i can take the chip out. my question is this: what are the
chances that they'll know there's an after-market chip in there, and is
there a possibility that that might be the problem? i don't want to mess
with the chip at this point because i didn't put it in myself, and i know
it'll take me hours including time to go buy the right tools to take it
back out. in addition, when the manger heard there was another problem with
my car, he came out and said he would look into the problem himself
tomorrow morning. will they have to look in the ECU to figure out what's
wrong? and will their computer instantly tell them that it's an
after-market chip? the light had come on once about 1000 miles ago for
about 2 seconds, but nothing since...

thanks in advance...any answers/comments will be greatly appreciated...

I know it's the dealer and I'm sure their techs have many years of
experience, but you can never take anything for granted these days. Have
they adjusted the shift cables properly?

At 35,500 miles you should still have 64,500 miles left on the powertrain
warranty.

If they look, they can find it. It won't say "Garrett" written all over the
computer, but....

If the check engine light is still one, they will have to scan the ECU for a
fault code. If the car is in your possession may I suggest you swap back to
the stock chip to avoid potential complications.

At work, we use 44 pin PLCC chips all the time. When I can't find a
removing tool or am too lazy, I just use a small flat bladed screw driver.
Insert it into one of the slots and lever the chip out. It will probably
only come half-way out, so you will have to take it out the rest of the way
with your fingers. I've never broken a socket or chip, so don't be too
scared. ;)

Subject: noisy door

i was wondering if anyone on the list has had problems with any of their
front doors. when i open the door on the drivers side the door makes a
creaking noise as if the rubber is rubbing against something. i tried
moving
the rubber boot around but it didnt help any. its not a major problem but
its just really annoying when you open and close the door, not to mention
embarrasing because its so noisy. any help or suggestions would be
appriciated...thanks in advance.

Subject: cruise control and window problems kinda long

has anyone had their cruise control go out on them? my cruise control
stopped working the other day. the thing is i was using it and all of a
sudden it stopped working. i tried to reengage it but it didnt hold my
speed. so i turned it to the off position and tried again but with no
success. a few days later i tried to use it again to see if it would work
and it did work. tried again today and it didnt. i have no idea where to
start to look for the problem if anyone has any experiences with this your
help or comments would be appriciated. thanks

another thing...

my passenger side window has completely stopped working. i have had one
window go out on me before and i got it fixed at the dealer. i believe the
regulator..i think that is what its called broke and it cost me like 200
bucks to fix. that window just dropped down and it was not being held up by

anything. this passenger side front window just wont go down. when i hit
the button on the door or on the drivers side controls i hear a clicking
noise but the window does not move. it seems like a similar problem i had
on
my nissan 240sx. the problem with that one was the motor which cost an arm
and a leg. any ideas? as a note...sometimes the windows that do work dont
go down at all. ill try all the switches that control those windows and
they
dont move at all. few minutes later ill try them after being frustrated and

they'll go down what is going on with the electrical system of my car...daym

could it be related? help me please
