Irish, Aussie, they're both colonies of criminals, aren't they? The
both speak with an accent (of course, American accents are not an accent!)
don't they? And they're both essentially islands aren't they? When they
say "football" the both don't mean the NFL, right? Same thing then! 

If you've been to Canada, it's like having been to Ireland, Australia,
India, South Africa, and any other country that has ever been in the
commonwealth. ;)
