RE: ABS
The EDL system on our cars uses the ABS brakes as a form of traction
control. When the system detects slippage in the front wheels it applies the
brakes to counteract. Sort of a poor man's traction control system. It
proved useful to me exactly once when I was going up a relatively steep
ice-covered hill.
Be careful that you do not accelerate too quickly in these situations as
damage to your tranny can occur (aka TFS Tranny Fragmentation Syndrome). A
hard launch, even on dry pavement, can cause tire slippage, leading to
activation of the EDL (up to 25 mph I think), and possibly leading to TFS.
