ABS

With our recent snow I got a chance to test out the ABS and now have a
question/concern.  Are all VW ABS systems this damn loud?  I get a very
nasty, deep, whine/grating (it's difficult to explain) sound when the ABS
activates.  I expect the pulsating pedal but the sound is what is worrying
me.  Any thoughts?  Is this normal?  Thanks in advance.
