Yes, its always a trade off. Once the boost comes on the K04 has much
superior mid and high level boost.  You might see a slight dip in
performance in 1st gear as your boost builds but as soon as the psi are up
there you're going to rocket away.  You'll also notice that at higher
speeds where previously the boost benefits tapers off and acceleration
slows you'll have significantly more power and continued acceleration.  

I've been in a Nissan 300 Z Twin Turbo  with a larger set of turbos from
HKS. The HKS car is slower than stock up to about 30 mph then when full
boost comes on and its blows away its stock brothers.  This car could pull
hard at 130 mph. Most factory turbos are designed to give the driver a
feeling of power as soon as possible. And since there are relatively slow
speed limits they don't want to waste the car's performance at a range you
won't (shouldn't) be  using. If you can be a little patient and give up
street light drag races you'll have a much more enjoyable car that's just a
blast on the highway.
