The 404 is the earlier version with one crossbar. It was designed for the
A3, then replaced by the 444 when Thule bought the company that made the
444. 404 is a little more difficult to put on (4 screws to tighten rather
than 2), but probably would have less wind noise due to the single-bar
design. The guy I bought my system from would rather sell me a used 404 than
a new 444.

My 404 works just fine and saved me about $50.

Is the 404 Thule rack a direct fit for the A3 VW Jetta?

Does anyone know about this?
I always thought it was the 444 but a guy swears its the 404 that fits it.
