Re: Air Filter pre-screen

Hi
The screen is there to cover the situation where it is very cold and
snowing and the car is not warmed up yet (very common in Deutschland) The
engine sucks in the snow which is stopped by the air filter. The filter is
soon coated with snow/ice. It is a race between the engine compartment
heating heating up enough to melt the snow and the engine dying due to lack
of air.

With the screen there the snow stops at the screen and soon blocks it. As
soon as that occurs the flap in the back of the air box is sucked open and
warm engine compartment air is sucked into the box supplying air till
things warm up enough to melt the snow.
Us Southern californians would never figure this out on our own but once a
German tells you about it the light comes on.
