RE: Getting into the air filter... (long-winded but complete)

Checking these items is Cake-ola
1) Towards the front of the airbox is a hoase about 1" in diameter, its held
to the airbox top by a hose clamp (either screw or spring) undo this, and
push the hose out of the way. Don't lose the clamp like I did... ;)
2) On the front and back sides of the airbox are two "Latches". Undo the
latches by lifting the lower portion causing the upper portion to "toggle"
of the airbox lid. You can now begin to lift the upper portion of the airbox
off the lower portion. Wiggle it free a bit.
3) Now on both sides of the Mass Airflow sensor are two more plastic big
"toggle latches". Undo these. Now pull the airbox lid off the MAF. Be
careful of the o-ring seal between the MAF and the airbox.
4) The upper airbox half should now come out, you kinda have to twist and
lift.
5) Now the air filter is exposed, remove it. It just lifts out.
6) Now the lower airbox piece is exposed. You can either remove it or play
with it in place.
Since it's best to remove it:
7) On the driver's side of the airbox between it and the engine are two
"rubber bands" with big ears on them. They string between two stubs on the
airbox and two likewise stubs on the car body. Carefully undo these without
letting them slip off the lower stubs on the car body.
8) Now the lower airbox can be "twist-lifted" out.
9) With the lower airbox out, you can:
-Look at/Clean/Remove and throw away the mesh screen at the front
of the airbox. Its held in by a screw.
-Look at/Clean/Remove the acoustic cone pressed into the upper
airbox. I just pulled mine out with a hefty set of visegrips.
-I usually accumulate some junk in the lower airbox section (I
hucked my mesh screen), so I wipe/vacuum it out about once per month.

I hope all this helps.
