8" wide is already pushing it.  BMW offsets are way lower than VW.  A
BMW rim would be more toward the outside of the car, if that makes any
sense.  If I remember correctly BMWs run offsets in the neigborhood of
15.  VWs run around 30-35.  I had 16 x 7.5 Borbets with a 35mm offset
with 225/40/16s on a GTI VR6 and had rubbing problems in the rear.  If I
had 215s I probably would have been ok, but I think an 8" rim would
cause rubbing problems regardless of tire size, especially with a 15ish
offset.  

I would call Tire Rack for the hell of it and see what they say.
