Well, your symptoms are typical of a running way too rich on the mixture, so
before I checked for bad intake valves, I'd check your air passage ways.  Make
sure a mouse hasn't found a nice warm home on top of your air filter and begun
dragging food into the airbox to feed the new babies (happened to a friend of
mine).   Replace the air filter if necessary.  Check to make sure no debris got
in any of the hoses or that a hose has disconnected ... I'd then suggest having
VW run a diagnostic on the fuel management system to verify that it's
functioning properly - then try the valves.

The idea of  your dad's is a little far reaching .... black exhaust has always
meant first and foremost that you have a rich mixture, which no doubt could be a
bad valve or two, but is much more likely a less costly problem to fix.
