I'm thinking that the shift points should be in the 5000 range for a stock VR6
US version

If you think about, the peak hp and lb-feet is somewhere in the 4000 range if I
remember correctly. After that power drops off again (although I don't know how
much) So allowing for gear ratios differences, I'd say the 5000's are a good
place otherwise your not in the sweet spot.
