I have a '98 GLX, & I have not noticed the heat problem that you are
describing.  When I look under the hood of my car, I notice that the entire
firewall is covered with aluminized heat shield.  It's very noticeable
because it has a reflective quality to it like polished aluminum.

I've never looked under the hood of a '97 (or any other VR6 cars for that
matter); so I'm not sure if your car has this heat shield or not.  If it
does not, then you may find some relief by retrofitting it to your car.
