tire size/stock rim

I was just wondering,

Would it be a good idea to put a larger tire size on the stock rim
i.e. 215's instead of the 205's

If this is possible would it offer better handling because of the larger 
tire size......I have seen a person do this on a BMW and he said that
his car handled a little better because of the larger tire size.  I wanted
to refrain from spending money on rims that can accomodate a larger
tire.  Anyone out there that can offer some input?.......Thanks!
