Yo Matt,
I have done this twice....and used the same creative tools that you are talking about..  You should try and find a pipe that you can slide the end of the hex key into to get more leverage.. It took me almost 2 hours trying to get that top nut loose, then I used to pipe leverage trick my dad showed me(thx dad!), and it came off on the first try.
I didnot need any special tools for the rear...just a open end box wrench, and a regular socket set...the socket fit will be tight, but be careful and you will not damage anything...
The first time it took me about 5-6 hours doing the job..most of the time was spend saying..'now where did I put that tool?'  I was a little scared also because I never did that also.... So that played a role in the time factor..
the second time it took me about 2 and a half hours...
