New list member

I am a new member to this list. I hope this is the right place. My son
recently acquired an A1 series Jetta (83?). We have almost got the car
ready for its safety check (Ontario) however, the car won't start/run
consistantly. It runs for a while (it it starts) then stalls. I'm
familiar with the possibility of a fuel pump relay problem but can't
work out a diagnostic strategy.(he used to have a Rabbit) but the Haynes
manual we are using doesn't provide a clear image of this particular
relay block. Any help would be appreciated as its keeping me away from
my real project (1970 Lotus Europa).
