BMW Headlights for Jetta III's

I have replied to some of you individually, but with all of this
discussion about changing the headlights, I thought I would throw in my
info about what I have done on my 95 GLX.

I am currently running the BMW headlights out of the 92-96 or so 3 series
BMW's. The whole conversion started as an idea of how to change my
lights without changing my hood. After someone backed into my car in the
parking lot at work, and cracked one headlight and dented the lower
grill, I decided to take the insurance money and put it towards the
conversion. A friend worked for a BMW repair center and had some extra
lights with scratches and such that were no good. I took those to my
body shop and asked if the conversion would be possible. After leaving
the car with them for a couple of days, they said yes.

I purchased a set of new lights and the mods began. The most time
consuming was making the grill, which is were I am at now. The BMW
lights are longer than the stock lights, no longer go into the fender
corners, and are shorter, which leaves about a 1 1/2 inch gap between the
lights and the hood. The grill that I have now goes completely around
the lights, fills in the corner gaps for the fenders and goes all the way
up to the hood. It has one large opening in the center with mesh behind
it and the stock VW emblem. It looks a lot like the ABD grill, just for
BMW lights instead. I am currently trying to find someone who will make
the grill for me using mine as the mold so that we can make a kit for
this conversion, including the correct wiring connectors in the engine
compartment. The problem is finding someone who is willing to make a low
run, probably between 10 and 20 grills. We are hoping to have the kit
for around $500.

One key that I found out afterwards is to have a Euro headlight switch.
Since the jetta only has the single filament bulbs, we were going to add
a relay to get the highs and lows to come on, because the original wiring
turns off the low beam when you turn on the high beam. with the Euro
switch and the jumpers, no relay was needed to get this effect. The car
was already wired for it. It just needed some help in finding how to do
it.

I don't have any pictures on the net yet, but am hoping to have a web
page up in February. I can snail mail you pictures and take your name to
notify you of progress on the grill. e-mail me or call me 619-589-0321
