Mark,
	I opted for the european center console from APS/Neuspeed with the Fisher
C-box Cassette holder and a '95 Passat Cupholder on the side of the
console. This setup is FAR superior to stock but not exactly cheap. The
euro console was somewhere shy of $100, the cupholder $38 and the C-box
$40. I have no problem getting into it in 5th, to be honest when I am
upshifting through 1st and third I do not use it, though I suppose I do
when the car is parked in 1st gear.
	A nice touch on top of this is a '96 Passat center console matte. It is
the same rubber pattern as the rubber piece in the bottom of the P
Cupholder, and is about $5 I believe. Use a little double sided tape to
tape down the front, as it is a hair too wide. This keeps stuff from
sliding around in the console, and vibrating as much.
