California Cup

Anyone else catch the Speedvision California Cup today? During the race,
dominated by RX7's, Mustang Cobras, and M3's, I noticed a lone GTI VR6
hanging in towards the back of the pack. It had some pretty heavy body
damage on the nose even at the start of the race which seemed odd.

About an hour or so into the 3 hour timed event the sports announcer
singled out the GTI and relayed an interesting story.

Apparently the car was involved in a major accident earlier in the week
where the motor was damaged beyond repair. VWOA had a press corp vehicle
there to cover the race for publicity, it was a VR6. Well you guessed it.
They pulled the stock VR6 from the press car and dropped it into the
race-ready GTI!! That driver was racing a *stock* VR6 motor against the
full blown race machines out there - and he was not in last place!
