To reduce belt slippage from them getting wet, you can add a splash shield
for the belts.  I think the part # is 191 825 250 01C, ~$40, for the 85-90's
(small bumpers) and 191 825 250 A 01C, ~$25, for the 90.5-92's (big
bumpers).  My '87 Golf had chronic wet belt slippage and this shield fixed
it pretty much.  As already advised, first check to make the belts are in
good shape and tensioned properly.
