Increased horsepower?

My brother has a 97 GLX and he wanted to know about the factory airbox
on his jetta.  He has heard that you can increase horsepower by removing
the factory airbox and installing an after-market air filter.  Is this
true?  If so, is the neuspeed p-flow any better than a q-flow from ABD?
Is installation fairly easy for a non-mechanically inclined person like
him?  What kinds of tools are involved?
