Tire Size

I know what I am about to say will be considered heresy by most on this list
but WTF....

I would like to go up in tire size on my GLX. I'm tired of hitting those steel
construction plates that road crews spread around here in Dallas (and they seem
to be working on every street in the Metroplex). I hit those with my 205/50 GAs
and I feel like I'm running over a brick at high speed.

Does anyone have the nads to admit to going up in tire size? Additionally, I
don't particularly care for the look of the 205/50s on my car, the wheel/tire
size combo looks too small for my Jetta.  I don't want to go up to a 16 inch
wheel because that will just exaggerate the problem (i.e. lower sidewall). I
also don't want to hear about how my speedo may be off by 5-10%, it is already.
I've examined the wheel well clearance and I am not sure how large I can go
before I start to rub.

So my question remains, has anyone put 205/55, 205/60, 215/50s on their car.
I'm sure the 205/55s will fit, I'm more interested in the other sizes. 

If you don't have the cajones to admit this to the list, I will be happy to
recieve your responses privately.
 
BTW, picked up my P.I.E. connecter last week and now have a Panasonic CD
changer cranking out tunes. Those of you with Bose systems contact your nearest
P.I.E. dealer, the adapters are hard to come by.
