You might think that the high pressure hose could get rid of a lot of
caked-on, baked-on stuff. And you'll be right. I've successfully used the
wash bay hose on my engine a couple of times, but you lose fine control. It
takes things like emissions diagrams right off... I'm not so sure I like the
implication of what could happen to delicate wires or other... stuff. So now
I generally just hose the engine down once a week whilst washing the car at
home, and maybe every other week I use simple green on the easy-to-get-to
stuff, i.e. everything but the inside of the cylinders. I've gotten
reasonable results with amour-all, son-of-a-gun, and those other vinyl
protectants when it comes to keeping the underhood somewhat cleaner, but
then, my climate mostly involves dust (Denver), so results may vary.

OK! Distributors! Easy!
Look on the driver's side of the engine, at the top, right there where the
spark plug wires plug into. Distributorless is a flattish, oblong affair
with all of the plug wires coming out of one surface. If there's a
distributor in your car, it will be there instead of the box. It looks like
a distributor. Washing pecautions might include a baggie and a rubber band.
You don't necessarily have to keep it bone-dry; just out of any seriously
heavy stream of water. At least, that always worked on my ol' beetle.
