taking of rear tires...

i was rotating my tires yesterday on my '97 jetta glxwhen i came to a
serious problem... my rear tires, or at least the left rear does not come
off after you take off the 5 bolts.  i popped the center cap, and there
appeared to be this round gold thing that seemed to be holding it on
there...  how are you supposed to get the rear wheels off????  the front
ones dont have that..
