Ouch!  OK, $350 is not totally unreasonable, but $600??!?!?
Tell them to go to hell!

I payed about $250 for mine.  Just before the 30,000 mile service, I got a
VW Club card, which saved me 15% on labor and 10% on parts.  So,
$25 membership in the Club payed itself during at a first opportunity. 
Plus, I got a nice T-shirt , US road map and some other junk and coupons.
