Re: Mobil 1 Oil filter

     We fear change.......

Yes, just because you have never heard of it doesn't mean that
break-in oil doesn't exit. However, VW used to come with break in
oil, I think they stopped this in 1996. My 1995 and earilier VR6
motors came with a different oil in it from the factory than you can
get over the counter. The factory oil didn't have detergents and
other additives in it. It was designed to let the seals fill with oil
swell to fill gaps, and allow the piston rings to seat properly. I was told
SPCIFICALLY by the dealer NOT to change my oil until the first (then recomended)
7500 miles (now 5,000miles) He related a story of a mechanic at their shop that
took his new Corrado home, drained it and replace the oil with synthetic. This
motor forever after leaked oil and burned oil and was eventually needed a
rebuild at 40,000 miles. Like I said I believe VW has changed this but, the
only person that I would trust would be the manual or a factory rep, and I would
follow their recommendations to the T since they are the ones that can refuse to
warranty work on your motor. I have faith that the engineer that designed and
built the motor I drive know better than me even though the recommendation of
waiting to 7.500miles goes against previous recomendations.
Sometimes change is good.

off soapbox...

BREAK IN OIL???? What is different about the oil they put in a BRAND NEW
car? Is it magic oil? I'd bet it's the same stuff you'll put in it for the
rest of it's life and therefore, I wouldn't think 7500 miles would be good
at all! In fact, the service manager at the dealership suggested I might
even change the original oil at 1000 miles.... then 3000.... then at the
factory paid for 5k servicing.... then 3K miles aver after. Well, I don't
think he was just trying to sell lots of service, oil and filters.... he's a
friend of mine.

I never heard of BREAK IN oil before!!!
