RE: modification of stock leather boot to accept aftermarket knobs

tools needed: sharp razor knife; assortment of "zip ties"; aftermarket
knob

turning the stock vw leather boot accept an aftermarket knob is very
easy and a very clean look to any vw interior

  1. 1)  take off the existing vw shift knob and boot
  2. 2) cut the leather 360 degrees around the upper middle of the shift
     knob
  3. 3) now the knob and boot should be separated (stock knob will
     appear to have a leather "beanie" on it)
  4. 4) turn the leather boot inside out
  5. 5) put back down over shift stick about 3 inches
  6. 6) use the "zip tie" and affix the boot, close to the top(which is
     now on the bottom) to the shift stick (you will be tightening the
     zip tie down around the inside of the leather boot until it is
     tight around shift stick; cut off extra length of zip tie)
  7. 7) now push the base of leather boot down which will turn the boot
     right-side out again
  8. 8) re-attach the base of the leather boot around console
  9. 9) you should now have a leather boot; about 2-21/2 inches of shift
     stick coming up through the top of boot; the boot at the top will
     appear as if it is hemmed
 10. 10) attach knob of your choice
 11. 11) you can now scoot the leather boot up until it meets the bottom
     of your new knob



if any of these directions are wordy and vague, please email me and i
will try to explain in a better way

hope this works for everyone; i have had mine this way since the car was
new and there have not been any problems up till now
