VR6 oil change

Folks, get this!
I just took my 97 GLX in for its first oil change and requested synthetic oil.
I was told that VW does not allow the use of synthetic oils, and if I use them
it will VOID my warranty!! What's the deal? Anybody else heard this? I don't
remember seeing it in my owner's manual. Is this one of the many ways VW is
using to get out of its 10 year/100000 mile warranty?
