the next big O

I've been alerted to Okafor since he came to U Conn. I now think he's something a bit less than Bill Russell, but the biggest thing to remember is that 85% of his career will be played in a Shaq-less NBA. That means he will go up against various 7 footers but no superman. At 6' 9", he is capable of being a center who could carry a team to a championship. (Of course, another argument is whether he could deal with Yao or Pavel, but who can? The 7' 4" guys will be handled by a double team or not at all.)

So, I would give up even Pierce for Okafor. But, I would try something less for a long time. Giving up Davis or Jiri makes sense, especially since I've targeted two second rounders who could be our third 2/3--Tony Allen of OSU and Julius Hodge of NC State. Either could be had with the third #1, maybe later. So, we add a "Dave Cowens" like center or PF(that's Okafor), add another 2/3 to go with Pierce, etc. and we're in awfully good shape.

Recapping: give up Davis or Welsch, two #1s, and throw-ins and we've made a great deal. I would have to believe Okafor's back was fine before thinking about Pierce. Still, with Okafor, Mihm, LaFrentz, Hunter, and Perkins. we would have an imposing front line again.
Cheers, Gene
