Indeed, a very interesting breakdown of the situation, one that rings true and
agrees with what Cedric Maxwell was saying last night (and what you could hear
Tommy grumbling about in his more lucid moments, and Cooz saying it outright in
the last game he worked). Ainge must be convinced that this team has the
personnel to play a more conventional defense and be successful at it, which
also would eliminate a lot of the other ills, such as giving up rebounds, which
leads to an inability to run, which leads to the constipated offense etc.etc.
And why not? I think Blount, Mihm, Lafrentz and probably Perkins can play
pretty good low-post man-to-man defense and block shots, and Pierce, Welsch,
Mike James, Banks and Davis can certainly be effective man-to-man defenders on
the perimeter (it remains to be seen whether Davis is really willing, but he
can be easily traded if he starts acting up). And all this without requiring
players to learn intricate schemes where EVERYBODY must function perfectly or
it all falls apart, and expend tremendous amounts of energy doing it.

It will certainly be very interesting to see how Ainge, via Carroll, coaches
this team. If his Phoenix years are any indication, we're in for way more
exciting basketball in what surely has been one of the most interesting years
in Celtics history...
