RE: threes

Although the more I think about it, the more I LIKE the idea of taking away 3 points when people take an illegal 3. <mad scientist cackles of glee> Have I mentioned that I *really* hate that shot <g>

Other than that, I'm with you on the options. And no, this has nothing to do with the fact that in my playing days I was a better inside banger and rebounder than long distance shooter. Honest <g>

You're right, I'm convinced, too messy. It was a wrinkle on Hondo's
suggestion to enable the 3 with 2 minutes left in each half. Option 1, kill
it. Option 2, go with Hondo.

So what happens if you take too many? You'd have to at least give the other
team a technical foul shot or there's no reason to not keep shooting them.
If you're going to make them just count for 2 over quota, it's creating
something else requiring more micromanaging from the scorers to the coaches
(and a lot of basis for pointless fighting among players) and doesn't
actively discourage a player prone to settle for the easy outside shot from
taking them regardless or even keeping track enough to make sure they don't
take them after the quota. Personally, I'd take 3 points away from the team
that screwed up and shot when over their quota to *really* discourage it
<evil grin>

Seriously though, I think a limit like that just creates new problems
without really solving anything. For example, what about the end of quarter
heaves where you get the ball back with no time to set up for a proper shot?
Especially end of game a game where 1-3 points would make a difference.
Should those really be punished if they're over quota? Yet if you don't
actively punish for shooting when over quota, what's the point of the
quota...

Sorry, still in favor of just kill the thing.

I totally agree with Kim. The three point shot wrecks the offensive flow. I
would be willing to consider a compromise to eliminating it - limit each
team to 2 three-pointers per quarter, or 3 per half. This would introduce
strategy - save your 3s until you need them.

Abolish it. I hate the shot. Look, basketball at its best is a game of
continual motion and flow highlighted by athleticism and controlled
aggression. The three point as an occasional option in an overall offense
based in that is fine, but that's no longer what it's become. It's now an
end in itself, and is there anything more ugly than a beautiful break
ending in an unnecessary 3 point heave clanging off the rim with no one
there to rebound. It's too tempting - you get extra points for taking the
easy way out with a shot that doesn't require teamwork, motion, controlled
athleticism and actually defeating the defense - the intellectual
underpinnings of basketball at its best. Merely someone standing outside
and heaving one up. In some cases taking us back decades to the days of the
set shot. It completely disrupts flow because of that and the long rebounds
it generates, turning basketball into a game of long ball HORSE. Ugh. Also
eliminates a lot of strategy with things like fouls, since you're not going
to get them that way.

I've no doubt Antoine was at least half kidding, although I have no doubt
he'd take advantage of a 4 point line if it existed, but obviously any such
thing would just reward people even more for doing the wrong thing.
