I think this is a better explanation of the Baker situation.

"As Vin Baker begins a second suspension for alcohol abuse, he does
so knowing full well he can't afford a third. That's because if he has
one more relapse, or is found to be in noncompliance with his agreement
with the Celtics, one of the team's options would be to terminate his
contract."
