O'Brien's resignation

What does this example have to do with anything?  O'Brien went to management
and offered his resignation - your example is management laying someone off.
And, it's also fairly common in some businesses for emplyees who have given
their notice to be asked to leave immediately.

In any case, keeping O'Brien around "for the season" would have become a
disaster just as soon as word leaked out that he was gone.
