Re: [Celtics' Stuff ] Johnson not sure he'll be offered the job. . . .

It seems here that GS is willing to dump Dampier or Van Exel and take back an
expiring contract (Mills). Having an expiring contract and being willing to
take back salaries can be very valuable right now (like NY did with Marbury).
The Warriors would get Wallace but only want his salary dump and maybe a future
sign and trade....

Maybe Van Exel is the guy to pursue instead. I thinks that GS would go for a
James, Mills and Stewart for Van Exel for a salary dump. Van Exel would bring
the lockerroom leadership aspect that the Cs lack and would really solidify
the point guard position and the perimeter shooting. You then trade Blount for
Josh Howard. You then have three future chances and two additional wild cards
to get your space eater with the mid-level exception, two no. 1 draft picks
and two no. 2s.... However, you probably have to give up a no. 1 or maybe two to
get Van Exel.....

<< Preseason enthusiasm about the combination of PG Nick Van Exel and C Erick
Dampier has waned in Golden State. The team offered the pair for Trail
Blazers PF Rasheed Wallace in a move that would create about $20 million in cap
space for the Warriors, who would not invite Wallace back next season. It's the
best offer Portland has gotten for Wallace, but the team knows it will not be
the last, so expect further patience and little action. In fact, with the way
the Blazers have been playing recently (four straight wins entering the week),
Portland might hold on to Wallace, try to keep the team's playoff streak
intact, then rebuild over the summer. As for the Warriors, they're likely to
continue shopping Van Exel and Dampier, if they can create cap space as part of any
deal. . . . >>
