It wouldn't work, according to RealGM:
Boston trades:
SF Eric Williams (9.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.7 apg in 28.7 minutes)
C Tony Battie (7.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 0.7 apg in 25.1 minutes)
Boston receives:
PF Antonio Davis (13.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.5 apg in 35.7 minutes)
Change in team outlook: -2.5 ppg, -2.9 rpg, and +0.1 apg.
Toronto trades:
PF Antonio Davis (13.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.5 apg in 35.7 minutes)
Toronto receives:
SF Eric Williams (9.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.7 apg in 82 games)
C Tony Battie (7.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 0.7 apg in 67 games)
Change in team outlook: +2.5 ppg, +2.9 rpg, and -0.1 apg.
TRADE DECLINED
Due to Toronto and Boston being over the cap, the 15% trade rule is
invoked. Toronto and Boston had to be no more than 115% plus $100,000 of
the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did not happen
here (only Toronto met the condition). This trade does not satisfy the
provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Here's the blurb. That would be a good move on the floor, but I can't
imagine the Celts doing it because of Davis' contract. Anyone have any
thoughts?

In the meantime, I'm informed Grunwald and Danny Ainge are discussing a swap
of Davis for Tony Battie and free agent-in-waiting Eric Williams.
Considering Boston's cap already is sky high ($60M this season, $59M next)
it's doubtful that deal will go down. That is, unless Ainge can figure out a
way to "capsize" Vin Baker.
