may be a decent player, but he missed the whole of training and
preseason--and isn't due back for at least another week!  He's going to
look quite bad in comparison to his teammates unless he's lucky, or the C's
play really, really badly.

Yeah, I was forgetting about the lack of practice with him being a new player here, when looking at that. That's a good point, although I think on the other hand you're ignoring how much just being a veteran asked to play a similar role to what you've done in the past can play into readily fitting in - look at how smoothly Raef did.
