The problem with this reasoning is the implication that all teams' first- and
second- or nth-best players have about the same level of ability. Aldridge
does not seem to consider that your team's second-best player may be worse than
another team's 4th or 5th best player. There's a big difference between LA's
second-best player (Kobe) and, say, Denver second-best player (I guess Andre
Miller, although you could argue for Jon Barry or Marcus Camby), or whoever
Golden State's second-best player is. If Aldridge thinks teams should trade
players based on their rank with their respective team, he's a lunatic.
And that's without going into expiring contracts, "sleeper" players with a lot
of potential, or how a particular player fits into a particular team.
