RE: Mavs now Twan's team

I guess we'll have to wait and see how Walker and the Mavs pan out, but
it would seem that I am not the only one who is of the opinion that
Walker had a negative influence on the Celtics. The fact that Ainge
traded Walker for a guy who is far less superior talent-wise suggests he
was desperate to get rid of him, and the fact that the entire coaching
and management staff agreed with the trade shows that they knew of his
influence also.

I am in full agreement about Walker's talent and that he is light years
ahead of Ron Mercer and even the guy he was traded for- Raef LaFrentz.
But it's purely his attitude that has let him down over the years. It
was evident when Pitino was in charge (refusing to play in summer
league, coming to training camp out of shape) and it's also been obvious
in recent times (having an argument with a heckler during the EC
semi-finals).

Because of his attitude I cannot see Walker regaining a position similar
to what he had with the Celtics, and I highly doubt that the Mavericks
will retain his services after this season. Watch for Antoine to be in
another jersey by the trading deadline.

In the case that Walker retains his All-Star form and he has a stellar
season, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong and will even feel
pleased for Antoine. I won't have my head down but rather in the other
direction, watching our group of guys grow into a solid cohesive unit
ready for the playoffs.

The problem with your comparison (and your conclusion
for that matter) is that Toine is the type of guy who
takes over a situation by the force of his
personality. When he first walked into that Mavs
locker room, he was (subconsciously or otherwise)
already making determinations on how to inculcate
himself into that milieu. He's gotta get his "grip"
on! So don't worry about Toine being a
"journeyman"--his peronality will never let it happen
(not to mention his game...actually, I will mention
his game; read further).

Furthermore, he's actually better than Mercer and will
always demand starter's minutes until old age catches
up with him. The only reason he'll skip from team to
team is because of incompetant coaches who can't or
won't scheme in a manner conducive to what Toine has
to offer. Hell, this just struck me: if he were
somehow to get on the new expansion team....he would
make a great player/head coach. Finally a coach that
knew how to use Toine. Of course, that's all fantasy.
The Mavs won't leave him unprotected because he's not
a cancer. And when the Mavs start gelling (adding
Antoine has to be just as great an adjustment for them
as it has been for us to lose him--even with a better
supporting cast they still need to learn to play as
one) where will you be? Yapping about what a cancer
he is? Hell no. Your head'll be down...
