Re: Surprised!

The rules at NBA.com don't support your contention. Here is the rule:

Section XIV-Traveling

i. A player who attempts a field goal may not be the first to touch the ball if it fails to touch the backboard, basket ring or another player.

PENALTY: Loss of ball. The ball is awarded to the opposing team at the sideline, nearest spot of the violation but no nearer the baseline than the foul line extended.

The entire set of rules can be obtained at http://www.nba.com/analysis/rules_10.html?nav=ArticleList

Subject: Surprised!

I'm surprised that Tommy Heihnson does not even know the basic
rules!!! He's just been shouting, "He caught his own shot! He caught his
own shot!!"

That rule was changed over 10 years ago. You can catch your own shot even
if it did not hit the rim or was not touched by another player it the ref
deems it to be a legitimate shot. I have to tell that to the guys I play
with all the time.
