Here are a few blurbs from Deveney's CBS Sportsline column. Hmm. The Kings,
Mavs, Spurs and Pistons are the teams most involved in scouting Europe. What
do they all have in common?

Wait, wait, don't tell me . . . they all like to shoot the three, the
not-so-secret weapon of the Obie doctrine!

Kidding aside, the Nelsons were already into the Euro scene over 15 years ago.
While Don was coaching the Warriors, Donnie was sleeping on the sofa in the
Marciulionises' living room at night and walking the corridors of power by day,
begging various Soviet occupier functionaries to let Sarunas leave the country
and play in the NBA. The Hawks under Stan Kasten and Mike Fratello were doing
it even earlier, trying to get Sabonis, Marciulionis, and then eventually
succeeding with Sasha "Gym" Volkov from the Ukraine. Except they didn't waste
their time with local functionaries; they had Ted Turner talk to Gorbachev
himself.
