Sizing up summer Celtics

Sizing up summer Celtics

A capsule look at the Celtics' summer league players who were not on last
season's regular-season roster.

By Joe Sullivan, Globe Staff, 7/14/2003

Toby Bailey, 6-6 guard: As a freshman, scored 26 points in UCLA's national
title win in '95. Drafted by the Lakers in '98, he's bounced around in the
pros.

Marcus Banks, 6-2 guard: He'll have to fare well against this competition if
the Celtics' top draft pick is going to be Boston's point guard when the real
games start.

Chris Burgess, 6-11 forward: In high school he was regarded as one of the best
players in the country. Started for Duke, transferred to Utah, but got hurt in
his senior year. Couldn't make Phoenix last season, played in the CBA.

Kris Clack, 6-4 guard: A perennial for the summer league and a former
second-round pick of the Celtics, but he's never shown enough to stay around
longer. A great leaper. Currently injured.

Lenny Cooke, 6-6 guard: See Shira Springer story in Friday's Globe. A supposed
AAU legend who hasn't made it.

Brent Darby, 6-1 guard: As a senior at Ohio State under coach Jim O'Brien
always seemed to have the ball, thus may need to learn how to play in a team
concept.

Kornel David, 6-9 forward: He was derided in Chicago for having the nickname,
''The Michael Jordan of Hungary.''

David Graves, 6-6 forward: Was just named the USBL sixth man of the year. He's
a streaky stand-still shooter who played at Notre Dame.

Brandon Hunter, 6-7 forward: The Celtics' second-rounder played at Ohio
University and will remind people of another Bobcat, Gary Trent. A rugged
rebounder.

Martin Muursepp, 6-9 forward: A one-time first-round pick of the Miami Heat.
Pat Riley said he was a big mistake. He's never made an impact in the league.

Kendrick Perkins, 6-10 forward: Celtics' second first-round pick is an
18-year-old trying to jump from Clifton J. Ozen High School in Beaumont,
Texas, to the pros. Complete mystery and probably will remain so. Better see
him play now because he's not going to play during the season.

Luke Recker, 6-6 guard: Started at Indiana, clashed with Bob Knight some;
originally transferred to Arizona but ended up at Iowa. Fizzled out his senior
year but still a great fundamental player.

Familiar faces: Returning Celtics J.R. Bremer, Kedrick Brown, and Bruno Sundov
also are expected to play in the summer league.
