What I can't understand about those quotes is how was the trade to a contending
team in western conference a "career setback"?

In Toine's twisted worldview, being traded to a better team amounts to a
personal vendetta against him and a career setback, because there might not be
as many shots for him to chuck. Well, that tells you right there the value he
places on winning vs. his personal stats.

No, they will never be squashed in those who think of him as a lovable, quirky
teddy bear with an oversized head. It's an emotional, visceral attachment that
can't be reasoned with. You can't convince these people to not love him, no
more than you can convince a child to throw away his tattered, beloved stuffed
toy. Heck, there are tens of millions of people in Russia who still adore
mass-murderer Stalin despite his unspeakable atrocities, and Toine is a mere
basketball player who has done nothing of the sort, just acted foolishly and
selfishly at times.
