two stats

Good numbers--26 for 79; bad numbers 8 for 14. That's what I will watch this year. It's simplistic, but it's a barometer, of sorts, of the stars' team play. Pierce and Walker took 26 of 79 field goal attempts; that's too good; not even 40%. Last year, it was consistently 50% and more which I considered a weakness. The other is turnovers--8 of our 14 by two players. That's over 50%.

When Pierce is hot, he doesn't need many attempts to rack up 30 points; indeed, that is an amazing facet of his game when he's on a roll and a sure contrast to Walker when he gets 30. There are some games when they are hot that these stats will seem like petulance, but not sharing the ball is a cancer even when it doesn't show negative results. It's like having a brilliant student who dominates class discussion; you often get all the ideas from one person, but the others need to develop their thinking skills, too. By the end of the semester, a well rounded discussion makes you more playoff ready, so to speak.

I think this team may induce the stars to be more team oriented. Of course, I'm Gene, the optimist who looks for the market to rebound today, the economy to be an issue in the election, and that Delaney woman to knock on my door this afternoon.

Sure is nice to have games going. Saturday is a veritable college football feast, but BB is still king. Gene
